Volunteering

There are many volunteer opportunities here at the Northwoods Wildlife Center but for all of our positions we need people that work well with others and independently. All positions come with on the job training. You do not need to be an expert in wildlife, veterinary medicine, education programs, or fundraising. All you need is a willingness to learn, a passion for the Northwoods, and a sense of humor.

Rehabilitation

Animal Care Volunteer

This involves preparing food for/and feeding permanent residents and/or patients. Different animals require different diets, and volunteers may handle everything from milk replacement formulas to dead rats. Please note that our patients are wild and only handled when needed and as little as possible. Also it is the discresion of the rehabilitators who may work with the animals and in what capacity.

Animal Transport Driver

These volunteers help out the NWC by picking up animals that were found injured or orphaned and drives them to the Center. Although we request that animals be contained before we send out a driver, sometimes that in not the case. Volunteers will be taught proper methods of animal handling for such occasions. Own vehicle is required. We are unable to reimburse for gas or phone calls. Drivers are most often needed during spring and summer months.

Produce Collection and Sorting

During the spring and summer months free produce is donated daily by local supermarkets. Volunteers are needed to go collect produce, return it to the center, sort through it and store what is usable and compost what is not. Note: These boxes can be very heavy and volunteers should be able to lift and carry 30 pounds. A center vehicle will be provided for this task.

Education

Tour Guide

Our Center houses numerous permanent birds of prey and turtle residents that tours are given of throughout the year. Tours last about half an hour and background information is provided about all of our permanent residents. An outgoing personality is needed and an ability to get along with all types of people and ages. We are busiest for tours late spring through early fall. In addition there will be some front desk duties such as answering phones, taking messages, greeting visitors, gift shop sales, taking registration for public programs, selling banquet and/or raffle tickets and other miscellaneous duties.

Maintenance

There is always something that needs to be cleaned, moved, fixed or built. Volunteers can help by washing dishes, sweeping , moping, raking trails, weeding, pruning and other miscellaneous duties. They can help build new cages, repair existing ones, build/tear down fences, paint walls and other duties.

Fundraising and Public Relations

Photography/Artwork

Take pictures of banquets, fundraisers, permanent residents and other going-ons of the Center to be used in our newsletters, website, facebook and local media. Artist can donate pieces of artwork to be used in fundraisers for the Center. Need to possess own equipment.

Administration Duties

Volunteers can assist with “back office” work for administration. Duties may include bulk mail preparation, writing thank you letters, compiling information for grants, or shredding documents. Organization skills are definitely beneficial.

Fundraising

The Northwoods Wildlife Center is involved in many Northwoods events throughout the year, though most are during the summer months. These events are excellent fundraising and public awareness opportunities and volunteers are needed to sell raffle tickets, lend a helping hand at our Halloween event or annual garage sale, be a server at our Snowmobile derby food both, organize an event, plus much more.
